Elementary school counselors support students' academic, social, and emotional growth. They work with students, families, teachers, and staff to help every child feel supported, succeed in school, and prepare for the future.

Mission, Beliefs, and Vision

School Counseling Program Mission Statement:

The mission of Kyle R. Wilson Elementary School's Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive, well-rounded and data-driven school counseling program, focusing on academic, personal/social and career development, within a safe, supportive, caring and nurturing environment so that all students achieve success in school and are prepared to lead productive lives as responsible members of society.

School Counseling Program Beliefs:

  • All students can learn and be productive members of society.
  • All students deserve equal access to resources and a rigorous curriculum.
  • The dignity, culture, and social/emotional needs of every student are to be respected and valued.
  • The school counselors will:
    • gather evidence and use data to continuously evaluate and improve the school counseling program,
    • plan and manage a comprehensive counseling program,
    • advocate for every student, and 
    • collaborate with families, staff, community resources and all stakeholders to target student developmental needs, ensure primary prevention, provide necessary intervention and  foster continuous student success.
  • The Kyle R. Wilson Elementary Counseling Advisory Committee will annually audit and evaluate the counseling program to provide quality service.
  • The school counselors will abide by ASCA's professional school counseling standards and ethics.

Kyle R. Wilson Elementary School students possess the knowledge, skills and habits of mind to excel in school, in their community, in college and in careers.  Students will gain the knowledge, awareness and skills to display Helpful, Engaged, Respectful, and Organized behavior. As world-class learners, our students will work to make a positive impact on the world by being productive students and citizens and create their own thriving future.

Kyle R. Wilson Elementary has RAMP School of Distinction designation for our school counseling program from the American School Counselor Association.

Meet Our Counselors

  • Marissa Payne

    Counselor
    Grades: Kindergarten and 3rd 
    Hello, Kyle Wilson Community! My name is Mrs. Payne and I am in my 22nd year as a School Counselor. I graduated with my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Frostburg State University and my Administrative Certification from McDaniel College. 
    I truly enjoy working with our students, families, staff, and community! 
    I love spending time with family (especially my hubby and our kids), anything New York, reading, traveling, going to the beach, sports (go Knicks and Ravens), being outside, all four seasons (especially snow in the winter), helping others, holidays, and decorating. So excited for another fantastic year working together!

    I am the youngest of two girls and I am originally from Charlotte, N.C. I have resided in Virginia for 11 years now.
    I've been a school counselor for 28 years. I graduated from Webster University in Saint Louis, MO with a master's in counseling.
    I enjoy spending time with my Maltipoo Mali.   I enjoy working with elementary students, families and community partners.

    Hello, Sea Lion Community! I am excited to join Kyle Wilson Elementary as a School Counselor for the 2026-2027 school year. I bring more than 17 years of experience as a school counselor and am beginning my fifth year with Prince William County Public Schools.

    I proudly call Fredericksburg, VA, home and enjoy spending time with family and friends, visiting the beach and lake, staying active, and being outdoors. I also enjoy painting, writing, and exploring creative projects, and I hope to publish my first children's book someday.

    I look forward to partnering with students, families, and staff to help every child feel supported, connected, and successful throughout the school year.

  • Connections Crisis Receiving Center, Woodbridge – 24/7 walk-in mental health care for youth (ages 12+) and adults.  No referral or insurance needed.
